The National Car Test (NCT) is a mandatory check to maintain safety standards in Ireland, which must be carried out at an Authorised Test Centre.

All cars between 4 and 10 years old must undergo an NCT test every two years. Vehicles over 10 years old require testing annually until they reach 30 years old, when the frequency reverts to every two years. Vehicles over 40 years old are exempt.

Do I still need a service?

The NCT is not a substitute for regular maintenance or any routine servicing of your car, because it only checks things, rather than fixing or looking after them. As a preventative measure, the NCT is designed to test vehicles for faults and roadworthiness, and when passed, owners receive an NCT certificate and disc.
